[Photo] The production and erection of 10 meters communication antenna

July 26, 2022

The 10 meter frequency band is the highest frequency band in the HF band. This band has many magical characteristics. Because the attenuation of the ionosphere is very small when it is open, even with small transmission power, unexpected long-distance communication can be performed. Due to the high frequency of the 10 meter frequency band, the small size of the antenna, it is easy to make and set up, and the cost of the materials used for manufacturing is low. As long as it is made, set up and adjusted according to certain requirements, you can make an antenna comparable to the product antenna . Having a good antenna is more important than choosing a superior transceiver. Here I introduce four kinds of antennas that are easy to make, low in cost, and have good effects.

(1) 1/2 wavelength vertical antenna

The basic structure of this kind of antenna is to vertically erected two quarter-wavelength oscillators (as shown in Figure 1). The antenna is non-directional on the horizontal plane and can be connected to stations in 360 degrees at any time. In the vertical direction, it is a low radiation angle of about 3 to 5 degrees. The antenna transmits and receives vertical polarized waves.

● Making

The materials used for the antenna are shown in Table 1. They are all cheap and easy to buy. Generally, it takes only one morning to buy them all. The main pole of the antenna adopts a bamboo or wood pole about 5 meters long (the length of the main pole is beneficial to the radiation of radio waves, but the mechanical strength of the antenna will be reduced, and it needs to be reinforced with a pull cable). The bamboo should be strong and straight. It is best to pre-coat the wooden pole with several layers of paint to improve weather resistance. Drill one end of the aluminum pipe with the PVC pipe for electrician according to the position and size shown in Figure 3. Connect and fix the plastic tube and the two aluminum tube vibrators with copper screws. Note that the hole on one side of the PVC pipe is larger to allow the screw head to contact the aluminum pipe. Pull out about 20mm core wire and shielded wire of the coaxial cable, and solder the wire lugs respectively. Connect the core wire of the coaxial cable to the copper screw of the aluminum tube to be erected above, and connect the shield wire to the copper screw of the aluminum tube below. Wrap the joint and coaxial cable with insulating tape to make the antenna and cable waterproof. Fix the aluminum tube vibrator to the main pole with a U-clamp. The U-clamp can use the old TV antenna. At the same time, fix the cable with cable ties. Install a cap such as a bottle cap on top of the aluminum tube vibrator to prevent rainwater from entering the aluminum tube vibrator.

The material of the antenna can also be replaced by something that you can easily find on hand. In addition, it can be changed according to the actual situation during erection. For example, if the PVC plastic pipe is not easy to find, you can not use it, as long as the upper and lower aluminum tube vibrators are fixed on the main pole by about 5mm, and the coaxial cable is directly connected to the two vibrator ends with copper screws (as shown in Figure 1) Schematic diagram), but only in this way, the waterproof performance of the antenna will be worse, it is estimated that the impact will not be great in the place where the rain is small. The antenna element can also be replaced with a variety of metal materials, such as aluminum profiles, iron threading pipes for electricians, thin iron water pipes, and copper pipes for air conditioners. The U-clip can be replaced with iron wire or nylon rope, as long as the vibrator can be firmly fixed to the main rod. The main pole can also use a 1-inch iron water pipe. At this time, the antenna can also be erected as shown in Fig. 2. The antenna element and the pull wire constitute the upper and lower 1/4 wavelength elements. The cable has both the function of fixing the main pole of the antenna and the function of the antenna ground net. The insulator of the cable can be processed with a thick epoxy plate, or it can be made of insulating materials such as plastic pipes by the method described later. The antenna that came out also worked very well. Moreover, the antenna looks like a full professional antenna.

● Erection

After assembling each part, check whether the fixed connection is strong, and then find some people to help to erect the main pole together. The location of the antenna is very important to the performance of the antenna. Open and unobstructed places (such as roofs and roofs) should be selected. Avoid high-voltage lines, telephone lines, TV antennas, iron frames or other metal objects as much as possible to avoid mutual interference and influence. . The antenna should be raised as high as possible to improve its effectiveness. Before the antenna is adjusted, first fix it in a virtual way or use a person to support it. After the antenna is completely adjusted, fix the antenna tightly. Generally, if the main pole is fixed against the wall, two or three Ω-type iron cards are used to fix the upper, middle and lower places, it will be very stable. If the main pole does not have a solid support, we must first find a way to fix the bottom of the main pole so that it cannot move, and then use three to four insulating pull ropes to pull the main pole from three to four directions. When laying the rope, apply force in several directions at the same time, otherwise the main pole will be broken due to uneven force, leave a person at the bottom of the main pole to monitor whether the main pole is vertical and also serves as a command When it is vertical, even if the main rod is not shaken at this time, the drawstring can be fixed.

● Debug

The adjustment of this antenna is very simple. After the antenna is installed, connect the SWR meter to the output end of the machine. By adjusting the length of the upper and lower vibrators or the angle of the wire vibrator, adjust the SWR characteristics of the antenna to make The feeder cable is well matched to improve the efficiency of the antenna feeder system.

(2) 1/4 wavelength shortened antenna

When the mobile application or installation place is narrow, it is huge to use the full-size antenna described above; some amateur radio enthusiasts who live in buildings cannot erect the antenna on the top of the building due to various reasons. Something nagging. Because it is impossible to send and receive signals inside the reinforced concrete building. Therefore, a possible solution is to extend a small antenna from the balcony or window for QSO. The 1/4 wavelength shortened antenna is an antenna designed to enable these HAMs to realize the dream of DX QSO.

The structure and principle of this antenna are shown in Figure 4. It shortens the original 1/4 wavelength vibrator, and adds a sense coil at the end of the vibrator, so that the electrical length of the shortened antenna is equal to the original, and the other half of the vibrator By grounding. Several taps are set on the induction coil for adjusting the antenna. If you intend to install the antenna in a fixed place for use, you can also determine the number of coils of the induction coil by first experiment, without tapping, so that the antenna is more beautiful and the weather resistance is better.

● Making

The materials used for the antenna are shown in Table 2. Theoretically, the closer the antenna oscillator is to 1/4 wavelength, the higher the efficiency of the antenna. Therefore, if the installation conditions allow, the aluminum tube should be as long as possible. It is best to choose the size of the aluminum tube and the plastic tube so that the aluminum tube can be just inserted into the plastic tube. This not only facilitates processing, but also makes the manufactured antenna mechanically strong. If you intend to use the antenna for mobile use, the aluminum tube can be replaced by a whip antenna. First process the aluminum and plastic tubes according to the dimensions shown in Figure 5. After the processing is complete, start winding the coil, remove the insulating layer at one end of the enameled wire and fix it with copper screws. Wrap about 20 turns between the outer sides of the plastic tube and make a tap every 3 turns (Figure 5). Copper wire. Generally, the longer the aluminum tube vibrator, the smaller the number of coil turns required. When the vibrator is equal to 1/4 wavelength (2.5 meters), there is no need to add a sense coil. To improve the weather resistance of the induction coil, when the coil is completed, apply epoxy resin to the outside of the coil. If the induction coil does not have a tap, it can also be sealed with a heat shrinkable hose. The aluminum tube vibrator and the coil are connected by insulated wires with pre-welded lugs.

● Erection

In order to maximize the effectiveness of the antenna, pay attention to your balcony or window, and the antenna should be erected as far away from the building as possible. The antenna can be extended at an angle of 45 degrees. When there is no obstruction on the top, it can be set vertically or horizontally (see Figure 4). It is a good way to use the original cooling hanger to fix the antenna. Since this type of antenna is a grounded antenna, the quality of the ground will determine the performance and radiation effect of the antenna, but it is not easy and unrealistic to install a real ground on the balcony or window. You can try to use the metal part of the balcony railing or window instead of grounding. Drill a small hole near the feed point of the antenna, and connect the outer shield of the cable with self-tapping screws. It is best to weld a lug to the outer shield to make the connection convenient and secure. After the connection is made, waterproof treatment is required to prevent future rust from causing many troubles (as shown in the schematic diagram of Figure 5). In addition, you can connect one or two 2.5-meter-long wires to the outer shield of the cable to replace the high-frequency grounding. The wires should be straightened as far as possible and open at 90 to 130 degrees to the antenna element, so as not to affect the appearance and others It is wonderful (Figure 4).

● Debug

First, connect the SWR meter and measure the standing wave ratio of the antenna while changing the connection of the tap of the induction coil. If the grounding is normal, the standing wave ratio should be able to drop to a very low value. When debugging to the lowest point, the standing wave ratio is still too large or the standing wave ratio cannot be adjusted to small, it means that there is a problem with the grounding. Check whether the connection between the outer shielding layer of the cable and the ground is reliable, whether the wire for the ground wire is stretched sufficiently, and whether there are metal objects around the antenna, etc. Finally, make sure that the cable used is 50 ohm. If there is no VSWR test instrument, it can only be adjusted roughly according to the receiving effect, because the antenna has the duality of receiving and sending, and the antenna with good receiving effect has good transmission effect (of course, the reverse is also the same). Adjust the receiver to the highest sensitivity, adjust the tap of the induction coil to make the received noise or signal the strongest (it is best to ask the local HAM to transmit signals to assist debugging), and then try to change the position of the ground wire or the antenna. From the angle of view, look for the strongest signal. Try to transmit the signal. Please ask the local HAM to confirm your signal strength. Continue to adjust the position of the sense coil tap and the ground wire until the other party receives the strongest signal.

This kind of antenna can be used not only in the 10-meter frequency band, but also by increasing or decreasing the number of coils of the induction coil, it can also make the antenna work in other amateur frequency bands. When debugging is proficient, you can switch the frequency band as long as you change the tap of the induction coil. To get fine tuning, you need to make more taps, or use an antenna tuner.

(3) Inverted "V" antenna

The vertical antenna has no directivity, and can receive signals in all directions including interference noise. If you want to communicate with a radio station in a certain direction often, or if you need to avoid interference in a certain direction, you can set up an inverted "V" antenna (Figure 6). The horizontal radiation pattern of the inverted "V" type antenna is figure eight, with the antenna radiating the most at 0 and 180 degrees; while there is almost no radiation at 90 and 270 degrees. The inverted “V” type horizontal antenna transmits and receives horizontally polarized waves, and the interference on the ground is mostly vertical polarized waves. Therefore, the inverted "V" type horizontal antenna has better reception noise and anti-interference performance than the vertical antenna. The inverted "V" type antenna may not be as good in performance as a horizontal 1 / 2-wavelength dipole antenna, but this type of antenna uses only one support mast, which is relatively convenient for installation and adjustment and relatively easy to adjust.

● Making

The material used for the antenna is shown in Table 3. Cut the PVC plastic pipe first, because it is only used for insulation and support, so it can also be replaced with other insulation on hand. Drill holes according to the size of Figure 7. Because the vibrator is not too long, the vibrator is made of thicker 2mm insulated wires. Of course, it can also be replaced with bare copper wire or bare iron wire. Weld the insulated wire as the vibrator to the lug, tie it through the hole in the plastic tube and fix it. Connect the cable and the vibrator cable. After the waterproof measures are taken, the feed part of the antenna is completed. Then fix the feeding part of the plastic pipe on the main pole with a U-shaped clamp (as shown in Figure 7). After passing the other end of the insulated wire through the plastic tube as an insulator, first fix it falsely, and do not tie the knot, so as to facilitate future adjustments. The wire can be set longer first, so that you can avoid connecting the long wire after you find that the vibrator is short. Near the feeding point of the antenna, the cable is wound with a diameter of 80mm into a coil of about 9 turns (see Figure 6), which is used as a balance-unbalance converter, and then fixed on the main pole. Of course, the product's balanced-unbalanced converter can also be used, or even not used. However, if a balun is not used, high-frequency current flows outside the shield of the cable to generate parasitic radiation, which not only disturbs the radiation pattern of the antenna, but also causes interference such as TVI (interference to the TV). . Insulators can be made of other insulating materials, or they can be used altogether. Nylon ropes used as pull cords directly tie the vibrator ends, but this method is less durable, but there is no problem when it is used for temporary installation in mobile applications. It is best to use materials other than metal for the pull wire of the vibrator, so as not to affect the radiation of the antenna. The main pole uses 4 ~ 6 meters long bamboo or wood pole (the main pole can not be too short, otherwise the radiation effect will be greatly reduced). The main pole also has a hot metal pipe, but it is said that the metal main pole has a slight effect on the antenna pattern, and I have not seriously compared the differences.

After the installation of each part is completed, carefully raise the main pole and fix the bottom of the main pole. Slowly pull the vibrator line to both sides, it is best to pull one side vibrator by one person, hold the main pole alone and observe the vertical condition of the main pole. After the vibrator is pulled, the false fixing is carried out first, and the pull rope is fastened after the adjustment is completed. The vibrators on both sides should be pulled apart in a plane (at 180 degrees) as far as possible, and this plane should face the direction you want to connect. At the same time, the angle formed by the vibrator and the main pole on both sides should be as equal as possible; the angle between the two arms of the antenna should be between 90 and 120 degrees to obtain the best radiation effect and at the same time to match the cable. If the included angle is less than 90 degrees, the radiation from the two arms will partially cancel out, making the antenna's radiation performance worse. If the included angle is greater than 120 degrees, the antenna will become the performance of a horizontal dipole antenna. The distance of the vibrator end from the ground or floor should be more than 2 meters. If the two ends of the vibrator are too close to the ground (floor), a capacitance effect will occur, and the ground (floor) will absorb some of the loss of radio waves. When the main pole is erected vertically and the vibrator is pulled well, it is found that the main pole is not secure, and it should be reinforced with a nylon cord or other insulating material at the appropriate place of the main pole to improve the safety of the antenna.

● Debug

The wire used to make the antenna element can be set a little longer, leaving a bit of thread when binding at both ends. After the antenna installation is completed, connect the SWR meter to roughly test the SWR of the antenna, adjust the transmission frequency, and determine the resonance frequency of the antenna. When debugging the antenna by transmitting signals, the power should be reduced as much as possible to avoid interference and damage to the launch tube. If the resonant frequency of the antenna is low, the length of the vibrator can be shortened properly or the angle between the two arms of the antenna can be increased. When shortening the length of the vibrator, it is not necessary to shorten the vibrator, but to shorten the end of the antenna and then wind it up and bind it (Figure 7). When you find that the antenna frequency is too high, you can also relax. In this way, after stepwise trimming, the SWR of the antenna can be minimized.

When the antenna does not include a balanced-unbalanced converter or a self-made balanced-unbalanced converter with insufficient number of turns, the length of the two-arm vibrator will be unequal, and the SWR of the antenna can be adjusted.

During the antenna adjustment test, people should stay away from the antenna, otherwise the antenna adjustment results will be inaccurate. After the antenna debugging is completed, fasten the fixing points of the antenna to ensure that the antenna is firm and reliable.

(Iv) Frame antenna

The frame antenna not only has directivity, but also has higher gain than the dipole antenna, so the receiving and transmitting efficiency is better. The perimeter of the frame antenna is about 1 wavelength. The lateral support is made of aluminum tube. For left and right insulation, the PVC plastic tube is used to support the feeding part. The longitudinal vibrator is made of 2mm diameter insulated wire. Adjusting the length of the wire can make The SWR of the antenna is reduced (the overall installation diagram of the antenna is shown in Figure 8). The feed of the frame antenna is the same as that of the inverted "V" antenna, so when connecting with a 50Ω coaxial cable, a balanced-unbalanced conversion is required. This antenna is equivalent to two 1/4 wavelength vertical antennas, and the horizontal plane has a pointed figure of eight.

● Making

The materials used for the antenna are shown in Table 4 and are common items that are readily available. When buying materials, pay attention to the matching of the outer diameter of the aluminum pipe and the inner diameter of the PVC plastic pipe. The aluminum tube and plastic tube are processed according to the size of the drawing. After the aluminum tube is sawed with a hacksaw, many burrs will be generated at the ends of the aluminum tube, so that the aluminum tube cannot be smoothly inserted into the plastic tube. Therefore, these burrs should be removed with a file. Insert the aluminum tube into the plastic tube according to the size of Figure 9 and temporarily fix it, and then drill the aluminum tube and the plastic tube together. The advantage of this is that the drilled holes can be accurately aligned. However, it should be noted that if the drill bit is not sharp, and the pressure used when drilling is too large, the aluminum front of the aluminum tube will be embedded in the plastic outside, and the aluminum tube will be stuck and cannot be pulled out again. After all the holes are drilled, pull out the aluminum tube and punch four large holes on one side of the plastic tube as shown in the figure so that the screw head can sink into contact with the aluminum tube. After finishing the processing and assembly of each aluminum tube, connect the cable and seal the joint and cable head and waterproof treatment with insulating tape. Install the crossbar tube on the main pole as shown in the general installation drawing in Figure 8. The two vibrator wires are set a little longer. Do not solder the wire lugs at one end of the wire, and wait for the adjustment to be completed before welding. Temporarily fix the vibrator wire between two aluminum tube vibrators.

● Erection

After all the components are properly installed, the coaxial cable is wound into a coil of about 9 turns with a diameter of about 100mm, which is used as a balance-unbalance converter. After fixing the shape with insulating tape, it is firmly fixed to the main unit with a cable tie On the pole (as shown in Figure 8). If you can't find the U-clamp, you can fix the cross bar with iron wire, etc., but there is no U-clamp to facilitate the adjustment. After the whole antenna is erected, if the main pole used is too thin, it will feel top-heavy, at this time, it is necessary to add an insulating drawstring to fix it. Because the antenna has directivity, if the antenna is required to rotate at any time, it is necessary to consider adding measures that can make the antenna rotate and lock flexibly. The general approach is to first weld an iron tower with angle iron, and install an electric rotator to drive the antenna to rotate. If you intend to use this antenna for mobile applications, you can make and debug each vibrator in advance. For the convenience of carrying, the upper aluminum tube vibrator can be cut into two pieces, that is, divided into two aluminum tubes with a length of about 1 meter. When using, a U-shaped clip is used to add a reinforcing bar and then the two aluminum tubes are connected together. When carrying it, it is split into four heeled vibrators and two vibrator wires, screws, U-shaped clips, etc., and put into a fishing rod bag. At the installation site, the main pole is erected, and it can be erected and used in about twenty minutes, which is very convenient.

This kind of antenna is mainly carried out by adjusting the length of the longitudinal insulated wire. Connect the SWR meter to roughly test the SWR of the antenna, adjust the transmission frequency, and determine the resonance frequency of the antenna. Generally, if you cut a short length of insulated wire in advance, you can get the lowest SWR value at the operating frequency. After the SWR adjustment is completed, weld the wire lugs to fix each part of the screw, and then use all insulative tape to carry out waterproof treatment to ensure that the antenna can withstand future wind and rain.

The above-mentioned antennas are very suitable for entry-level amateur production. Not only the material requirements are more flexible, but also the repeatability of the production is good, and the debugging is simple and practical. Changing the size of the antenna element can be applied to other frequency bands. Many friends went to the hardware store on Sunday morning to buy all the parts and materials, and made them in the afternoon. They found a few friends to set up in the evening, and they could use QSO in the evening. For HAMs who like to play mobile communications, you can make all the parts first, reach the mobile application site, fully terrain features, and rely on the materials you can find, you can set up within half an hour, and contact HAMs everywhere.

Erecting an antenna is a high-altitude operation. Safety protection measures should be taken to prevent people and objects from falling from a height. Don't take it lightly and keep safety first. The antenna should not be placed in a place that is not reliable or close to the power line. Even if it is barely built, it will cause people to worry day and night, bringing endless troubles. When it rains and thunders, the construction must be suspended. The rain makes the construction site wet and slippery, and the environment becomes bad, which is easy to cause danger. Moreover, the humid environment will affect the characteristics of the antenna and make the adjustment of the antenna inaccurate.

After the antenna is erected, always pay attention to the changes in the antenna SWR. When the SWR suddenly deteriorates, it means that the antenna has suffered an accident. Check the antenna twice a year to see whether the waterproof tape of the antenna has fallen off or deteriorated, whether the antenna and cable have entered the water, whether the cable is loose, whether the main pole is secure, etc., and immediately handle any abnormalities.

In the amateur radio activities, adhering to the amateur spirit, making antennas is an activity to practice the amateur spirit. As long as you make it carefully and adjust it carefully, it will become an exquisite work.
